Filter Types
Each filter type has its strengths. Not sure which one suits your setup? Bring your pump model and pool size and we will work it out together.
Sand Filters
The most common filter type in South Africa. Low maintenance, long-lasting, and effective for most residential pools. Sand media traps particles down to 20 microns. Replace the sand every 3 to 5 years for best results.
EnquireCartridge Filters
Finer filtration than sand, capturing particles down to 10 microns. No backwashing required, which saves water. Ideal for smaller pools or where water conservation matters. Cartridges need replacing annually depending on use.
EnquireDE Filters
Diatomaceous earth filters offer the finest filtration available, down to 3 microns. Crystal-clear water but requires more maintenance. Popular with pool owners who demand the cleanest possible water.

Pool Filter FAQ
Which pool filter type is best for my pool?
For most South African residential pools, a sand filter is the best balance of cost, maintenance, and performance. Cartridge filters are great for smaller pools or where you want to save water since they don't need backwashing. DE filters give the clearest water but need more hands-on maintenance. Come in with your pool size and we will recommend the right one.
How often should I backwash my sand filter?
Backwash when the pressure gauge reads 8 to 10 psi above the clean starting pressure. For most pools, that works out to once a week during summer and every two to three weeks in winter. Over-backwashing wastes water and chemicals. Under-backwashing reduces filtration efficiency.
When should I replace the sand in my filter?
Every 3 to 5 years for standard silica sand. If you notice your pool staying cloudy despite correct chemical levels, or you can see sand returning to the pool through the jets, it is time. Glass media is a longer-lasting alternative that we also stock.
Can I upgrade from sand to glass media?
Yes. Glass filter media is a direct replacement for sand in most filters. It filters finer, lasts longer (up to 10 years), and requires less backwashing. We can advise on the correct amount for your specific filter.
