The Standard in Pool Treatment

HTH is the most recognised pool chemical brand in South Africa. Their range covers every aspect of pool water treatment, from daily chlorination to specialist algae control and water balancing. When pool professionals talk about chemical treatment, HTH is the benchmark.

Super Shock Treatment

When your pool goes green or cloudy, shock treatment is the reset button. HTH Super Shock delivers a concentrated chlorine dose that kills algae, destroys organic waste, and restores water clarity fast. Essential after heavy rain or parties.

Enquire

Algaecide

Prevent algae before it starts. HTH algaecide works alongside chlorine to stop green, black, and mustard algae from taking hold. A weekly dose keeps walls and floors clean between brushing.

pH Plus & pH Minus

Balanced pH is the key to effective chlorine. Too high and your chlorine stops working. Too low and it irritates skin and damages equipment. HTH pH Plus raises pH, pH Minus lowers it. Bring a water sample in and we will tell you exactly what to add.

Stabiliser (Cyanuric Acid)

Protects chlorine from UV breakdown. Without stabiliser, sunlight destroys your chlorine within hours. One dose at the start of summer keeps your chlorine working all season. Essential for outdoor pools in South Africa.

Clarifier & Flocculant

HTH clarifiers bind fine particles together so your filter can catch them. For severe cloudiness, flocculant drops everything to the floor for vacuuming. The last step to crystal-clear water when chlorine alone is not enough.

HTH FAQ

How much chlorine does my pool need?

It depends on your pool volume, water temperature, and bather load. As a general guide, a 50,000 litre pool needs roughly 200g of granular chlorine per week in summer. But the only accurate answer comes from testing your water. Bring a sample to either branch and we will test it free of charge and give you exact dosing.

Why does my pool keep going green even though I add chlorine?

The most common reason is low stabiliser. Without cyanuric acid in your water, sunlight destroys chlorine within a few hours. Other causes include incorrect pH (chlorine stops working above pH 7.6), high phosphate levels feeding algae, or a filter that needs backwashing. Free water testing at Ridd's will identify the exact problem.

How often should I shock my pool?

Once a month during swimming season as a preventive measure. After heavy rain, a braai with lots of swimmers, or any time the water looks dull or smells of chlorine (that smell is actually chloramines, which means your chlorine is bound up and not sanitising). Shock treatment breaks down chloramines and reactivates your free chlorine.

Is HTH better than other pool chemical brands?

HTH is the most widely used pool chemical brand in South Africa and internationally. Their formulations are consistent and well-documented, which makes dosing reliable. We also stock Africhem as an affordable alternative. Both work well when dosed correctly. The difference is that HTH has a wider product range for specialist treatments.
