How We Clean a Green Pool in 5 Days
A green pool is not a one-visit job, no matter what anyone tells you. Algae has to be killed, dropped, vacuumed, and the chemistry rebuilt before the pool is safe to swim in. Here is exactly what our cleaners do, day by day.
Day 1
Test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, stabiliser, and phosphates. Backwash the filter, clean baskets, and apply the first round of granular chlorine shock. Algaecide and clarifier go in once chlorine is settled.
Day 2
Walls and floor get a full manual brush to dislodge dead algae. Pump runs 24 hours. Filter pressure is monitored and backwashed if needed. Water turns from green to cloudy grey-blue, the sign that shock is working.
Day 3
Dead algae sinks to the floor. We vacuum on the waste setting to remove it without clogging the filter. Water level is topped up. Chemistry rechecked. A second shock dose is added if chlorine demand is still high.
Day 4
Clarifier helps fine particles bind together so the filter can catch them. We rebalance pH, alkalinity, and stabiliser to long-term targets. Water visibility should be near-normal at this stage on most pools.
Day 5
Final inspection. Equipment health check on pump, chlorinator, and timer. Written report on what was done, why the pool went green, and what to change to stop it happening again. Pool handed back swim-ready.
Light algae bloom? We can sometimes finish in 2 or 3 days. Severe black-green or untreated for months? It can run to 5 or 6 days. We confirm the visit count when we quote, before any chemicals are added.

Pool Cleaning Chemistry Targets
Cleaning a pool is not just brushing and vacuuming. It is hitting five chemistry numbers in the right order. Here is what our cleaners are working towards on every job.
Free chlorine after shock
5 to 10 ppmDay 1 shock target on a green pool. We hold this range until the water clears, then bring it back to a normal 1 to 3 ppm before sign-off.
pH during cleanup
7.2 to 7.4Slightly low end of the normal range. Chlorine kills algae fastest at lower pH. We rebalance to 7.4 to 7.6 once the pool is clear.
Total alkalinity
80 to 120 ppmBuffer that stops pH bouncing during a shock cycle. If alkalinity is low when we arrive, we correct it on Day 1 with sodium bicarbonate.
Stabiliser (cyanuric acid)
30 to 50 ppmRequired to stop UV burning off your chlorine. Topped up only if low. Too much stabiliser slows shock chemistry, so we test before dosing.
Phosphates (algae food)
Below 200 ppbPhosphates feed algae. Repeated green-pool problems often trace back to a high phosphate count. We test on arrival and dose a phosphate remover when needed.

Can you fix my pool the same day?
Most one-off cleans, post-storm jobs, and event-prep cleans can be booked within 24 to 48 hours. A green pool needs a full multi-day cycle for chemistry reasons. We will not rush the chemistry just to charge a single visit.
Do I need to be home when you clean the pool?
No. We work in the garden and around the pool equipment. As long as we have safe access through a side gate or remote, you can be at work, on holiday, or anywhere else. Photos and a written summary are sent on completion.
Why does my pool keep turning green?
Green pools come from low free chlorine, high pH, poor circulation, or high phosphate levels. We test the water on arrival and tell you which one caused this round. Many West Rand pools also need stabiliser correction after summer rain.
Do you supply the chemicals or do I need to buy them?
